To celebrate the start of a new year, we asked our founder Sam Newell for his advice on how to be successful in the hunt for top consulting talent in 2022.
Ah, January. We’ve packed away the decorations and sworn off cream-based liqueurs for another year. As we roll up the sleeves and get stuck into work again, there’s no better time to make a fresh start and improve our talent processes!
In our blog on attracting and retaining talent we explored the pressures the pandemic has heaped on talent pipelines. Previously, consultancies might have had 200 candidates vying for a position, but the sheer heat in the current hiring market means they now might only get five. It used to make perfect sense to invest time, effort, and resources into a robust selection process of CV screening, competency-based interviews, case studies, and presentations to make sure the cream of the crop rose to the top. But it’s now a buyers’ market for candidates, and talent teams need to change their approach accordingly.
So, to jump-start your 2022, here are three things you can do right now to improve your hiring success rate:
1. Accelerate
Time is of the essence. If you only have five candidates, the likelihood is one or more of them has multiple other options or offers on the table. All other things being equal - a good job and a good offer at a good company – the first offer will almost certainly win out. So, ditch some of the hoops and explore more agile approaches to screening and interviewing.
2. Tickle your candidates’ fancy
Be the best option – simple as that! Candidate engagement is the key. Use the time and resource you’re saving to get stuck in to building up relationships with candidates. Sell them on everything that makes your organisation a great place to work and give yourself the best chance of keeping them engaged throughout the recruitment process. That way, you’ll have the pick of the bunch.
3. Work smarter, not harder
Streamlining your hiring processes not only saves you and your candidates time but also frees up your resources to focus on other things too. Perhaps it’s time to look at your employer branding to make sure it’s telling the right story about your organisation to attract the best talent?
